Development of China's FFS membrane industry

FFS membrane industry begins to develop in China

The FFS film is a type of roll-shaped packaging bag produced using polyethylene as the main raw material. It is produced through a multi-layer co-extrusion blow film, printing, and hemming embossing production process. It is primarily used for the automated packaging of solid petrochemical products such as PP, PE synthetic resins, polyformaldehyde, fertilizers, and other products. It is a heavy-duty film capable of performing multiple operations such as continuous automatic forming (Form), filling (Fill), and heat sealing (Seal). It offers advantages such as high packaging efficiency, no pollution, material savings, low labor costs for filling, good sealing and moisture resistance, and more. The FFS film boasts strengths such as high tear resistance, strong tensile strength, high ball drop impact resistance, excellent sealing effects, good skid resistance, easy stacking, smooth surfaces for printing, and ease of recycling. Its use is destined to replace traditional plastic woven bags and composite plastic woven bags.

In developed countries like Europe and the United States, FFS films have long replaced traditional packaging formats and dominate the packaging field for synthetic resins. When China initially introduced FFS heavy packaging technology, due to limitations in technological level and supporting facilities, the quality of the produced heavy packaging film was relatively low, unable to meet heavy packaging requirements. In 2000, against the backdrop of China’s ethylene expansion wave, with the gradual development of the Yangzi Petrochemical 650,000-ton ethylene expansion project, the Yangzi Plastics and Chemicals Company, as a supporting project, launched its 3,200-ton FFS blown film project. Since then, China’s heavy packaging bag market has gained development opportunities with the commissioning of some new petrochemical enterprises.

Technical level of China's FFS membrane industry

Since 2010, heavy-duty packaging film has gradually been promoted and used in the packaging industry. Currently, well-known brands of production equipment for FFS films worldwide include W&H and Reifenhauser, which produce five-layer co-extrusion blow film machines, with a production capacity of approximately 350kg per hour. ##’s Hanwang five-layer co-extrusion blow film machine has a production capacity of about 320kg per hour, while China’s Guangdong Jinming five-layer co-extrusion blow film machine has a production capacity of about 300kg per hour. Among Chinese manufacturers, there is also Zibo Guoyin Machinery Co., Ltd.

In recent years, with the widespread application of automatic filling lines for raw materials, customers have advocated for packaging to move towards thinner and lighter designs to reduce packaging costs. The thickness of FFS films in China has decreased from 0.16mm to 0.14mm, while similar products in Europe have maturely controlled their thickness at 0.12-0.14mm. The thinning of FFS films has become an industry trend, not only in line with national environmental policies but also helping packaging users save considerable packaging costs. Therefore, the technology of thin-walled and lightweight FFS films has become one of the core competitivenesses of packaging industry manufacturers. Both domestic and foreign blown film equipment technology have developed rapidly, with the current thickness accuracy of blown film machines reaching 2Σ≤5-7%. In recent years, Hunan Changjin Company(the new FFS film manufacturer) has continuously accelerated the thinning of heavy-duty plastic packaging films, reducing the thickness of packaging bags from the original 0.14mm to 0.12mm and then to 0.105mm through two rounds of research and development.

Both domestic and foreign FFS film production involve three processes: blow film, printing, and hemming embossing. Multi-layer co-extrusion blow film technology is already very mature. The 3-layer co-extrusion blow film technology is mainly used in the FFS film industry, and the 5-layer co-extrusion blow film machine is structurally more advanced. However, due to significantly higher equipment prices than product performance improvements, 7-layer and above blow film technology in the FFS film field is not competitive.

Chinese ffs film manufacturer are mainly distributed among private enterprises, accounting for 61.9% of the market, followed by state-owned enterprises, accounting for 20% of the market. Foreign-funded enterprises, due to their technological advantages, account for 11.9% of the Chinese market.

China FFS membrane applications and prospects

The heavy packaging film is primarily utilized for the packaging of solid petrochemical products such as catalysts, fertilizers, synthetic resins, and more recently, it has also found its application in the salt industry, feed, and grain. To achieve superior packaging results, the film must possess excellent heat sealing performance, good stiffness, puncture resistance, high strength, printing quality, and high glossiness. The downstream industries are experiencing trends of industrial upgrading, market expansion, and quality optimization, which places higher demands on the quality of heavy packaging film products. The downstream demand not only increases the market size of the heavy packaging film industry but also promotes the development of product quality control systems in enterprises, exerting a positive influence on ffs film manufacturer.

With the development of social economy, the heavy packaging film industry is also developing rapidly and has become an important part of the plastic products industry. With the development of science and technology, the heavy packaging film industry has also made great progress, producing a wide range of film products, such as packaging film, stretch film, insulation film, protective film, etc., which can meet various needs in different fields. In addition, the development of the heavy packaging film industry is supported by national policies. For example, the country attaches great importance to environmental protection and encourages the demand for film products. There are also some preferential policies for the film industry, thus promoting the development of the heavy packaging film industry. develop.

Due to the constraints of resource scarcity, the application scope of traditional packaging forms such as plastic woven bags and paper-plastic composite bags is gradually shrinking, and the green and environmentally friendly FFS heavy packaging film is poised for rapid development. The FFS heavy packaging film has seen robust growth in recent years due to its advantages of being non-polluting, material-saving, efficient in packaging, and possessing excellent sealing and moisture-proof properties as well as good printing performance. With continuous advancements in production technology, the FFS heavy packaging film is gradually replacing traditional packaging to become the mainstream product in the heavy packaging sector. This shift towards more sustainable and efficient packaging solutions not only addresses the challenges posed by resource scarcity but also meets the growing demand for eco-friendly packaging solutions in today’s market
